Agriculture? In Los Angeles?

With a highly urbanized landscape housing over ten million residents and accommodating millions of visitors and workers who live in neighboring areas, most people today don't think "agriculture" when they think of "Los Angeles." However, there was a time when farmers, ranchers, horticulturalists, and vintners produced more agricultural commodities in Los Angeles County than any other county in the nation. Yes, we were the top production county in the nation when considering commercial agricultural production, and before Prohibition and the Great Depression, we were the center of wine production in the western U.S. The reign at the top of agriculture ended in 1950, when the post-World War II population boom converted groves, ranches, and farms into new neighborhoods, business parks, and manufacturing plants.

We still have farms, nurseries dot the map all over the county, and vineyards are experiencing a resurgence. Over 150 weekly certified farmers' markets, most operating year-round, can be found throughout the County. The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and Los Angeles International Airport are the gateways through which tons of agricultural commodities are constantly imported and exported.
