POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Positions allocable to this class typically work under the immediate technical supervision of a journey level inspector while assisting in agricultural inspection and other enforcement work. Incumbents in these positions must exercise basic knowledge of insect recognition as well as of state and county policies, procedures, and laws governing agricultural enforcement.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Drives a motor vehicle to multiple locations to maintain and service a trap route on properties. Reads and follows maps/directions, clearly writes directions and addresses, and draws visual landmarks and structures. Enters and exits a motor vehicle repeatedly and works for considerable lengths of time in adverse weather conditions (heat/sun, cold, winds, rain, and smog). Visualizes slight differences in small insects. Keeps accurate records. Interacts with the public sector and homeowners. Handles pesticides and solvents. Assists in inspecting agricultural products at freight, express, and post offices, and nurseries. Assists in the inspection connected with enforcement of plant pest and agricultural standardization laws. Assists in trapping insects as part of an infestation detection program. Keeps records and makes inspection reports. Assists in agricultural inspection and enforcement work.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate of Art degree or higher from an accredited* college or university in Biology, Botany, Entomology, Horticulture, Parasitology, Plant Pathology, or Zoology.**

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Directs the administrative and enforcement activities of a major division or program of the Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures Department. Positions allocable to this class report to a Deputy Director, Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures and are distinguished by their management and administrative responsibilities for major divisions such as pest exclusion, produce quality, pest detection, weed abatement, pesticide regulation, device accuracy, business practice investigations, and pest management. All positions allocable to this class must have the ability to plan, control, direct and evaluate the work of field inspectors and support personnel. Incumbents must have refined written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to interact effectively with managers in other County departments and the industry.
ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:

Accreditation:***Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Oversees the work of a weed clearance crew clearing property of grass, weeds, and other combustibles, and loading debris on trucks for removal. Demonstrates and ensures safe operating practices and procedures, departmental safety regulations, CAL-OSHA regulations, and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) guidelines for use of safety equipment, protective devices, herbicide/pesticide applications, special clothing, etc. Coordinates and evaluates weed, brush, and rubbish clearing operations conducted by vendors, including tractor operations and hand work. Inspects properties prior to, during, and after clearance to determine the necessity and type of clearance and to ensure completion of the work. Prepares all required reports relating to the clearance of weeds, brush, and/or other debris from property. Assists in the updating of the Assessor's Map Book and maps used by the Weed Abatement Division. Ensures the proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment used in clearing operations and may participate in maintenance and repair of the tools. Discusses and coordinate clearance problems or complaints with property owners, homeowner associations, or other interested parties. Drives a variety of vans or trucks up to 10,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight as needed.
